Watch out the cold weather is coming!

When was the last time you checked your engines coolant?

Your engine’s coolant is just as important as oil and you need to make sure that your car is correctly protected for the cold weather. Your cars coolant raises the boiling point of the cooling system in summer, lowers the freezing point in winter, it also protects the engine and cooling system from corrosion.

Your coolant has a dual function it keeps the engine from overheating or freezing when driving in extreme climates. The chemicals in the coolant break down, becoming less effective over time.

Rather than wait until you have a costly problem you should pay attention to your coolant. Whether you are looking to do a complete system flush or a top up you’re going to have to find the right coolant for the job.

Unfortunately manufactureres dont all use the same type of coolant there are three main types of coolant that car companies use: Inorganic Additive Technology (IAT), Organic Acid Technology (OAT), and Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT).

It is worth noting that if you mix the wrong coolants they could chemically react and form a gel rather than a liquid. The coolant would stop flowing through the system, clogging up coolant passageways and water jackets, radiators, and heater cores. The water pump could overheat and fail due to a lack of lubricant in the coolant. Head gaskets may blow, heads warp, and the engine could suffer major damage.

So if in doubt come along and see us, we can help your car through winter giving you peace of mind.
