What Are the Fines and Penalties for Driving Without an MOT?

Fines up to £1,000: The standard penalty for driving a vehicle without a valid MOT is a fine of up to £1,000.
Fines up to £2,500 and Penalty Points: If your vehicle is found to have "dangerous" faults (such as worn-out brakes or bald tyres), the penalties escalate dramatically. You could face a fine of up to £2,500 per defect, 3 penalty points on your licence, or even a driving ban.

Does No MOT Invalidate Your Car Insurance?

You could be personally liable: If you cause damage to another vehicle or property, your insurer may pay out to the third party by law, but they can legally pursue you to recover those costs.
Secondary offences: If your insurance claim is voided due to a lack of MOT, you could also be prosecuted for driving without valid insurance—which brings a £300 fixed penalty and 6 points, or an unlimited fine if taken to court.
Breakdown cover cancellation: Many major breakdown providers will refuse to assist or tow your vehicle if it breaks down without a valid MOT.

Are There Any Exceptions?

There are only two strict legal exceptions where you are allowed to drive a car on public roads without a valid MOT:

Driving to a pre-booked MOT test: You may drive the vehicle directly to a test centre, provided you have proof of a pre-booked appointment.
Driving to or from a garage for repairs: If your vehicle failed its MOT, you can drive it directly to a garage for repairs, or back to the re-test centre.

Note: In both cases, the vehicle must still be safe to drive. If your car has been marked with a "dangerous" defect on a recent failure sheet, it cannot legally be driven at all—it must be towed.
