Passing Your MOT First Time: The Ultimate Pre-Test Checklist

The MOT test can be a source of anxiety for many drivers in Martlesham and Woodbridge. While some mechanical issues require a professional eye, a surprising number of cars fail on simple things that could have been fixed in minutes at home.
At Dave Chapman Ltd, we want to help you get through your MOT with as little stress as possible. To help you avoid a "Major" defect or a "Dangerous" fail, we’ve put together this simple DIY checklist you can run through before bringing your car to our Martlesham workshop.
1. The '20p' Tyre Check
Tyres are one of the most common reasons for an MOT failure.
Tread Depth: The legal minimum is 1.6mm. A quick way to check is to place a 20p coin into the main tread grooves. If the outer rim of the coin is hidden, your tyres are likely legal. If you can see the rim, it’s time for a change.
Condition: Look for any bulges, lumps, or nicks in the sidewalls.
Pressure: Ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended levels (usually found on a sticker inside the driver’s door or in your manual).
2. Light it Up
Nearly 1 in 5 MOT failures are due to a blown bulb. Check every single light on your vehicle:
Headlights (Main and Dipped beam)
Indicators and Hazard lights
Brake lights (Ask a friend to stand behind or look for the reflection against a wall)
Rear fog lights
The Number Plate Light: This is a very common "stealth" fail. Make sure the small bulb illuminating your rear plate is working.
3. A Clear View of the Road
The tester needs to know you can see clearly.
Wipers: Check the rubber for any tears or fraying. If they smear the glass rather than clearing it, replace them.
Screen Wash: This is the easiest fail to avoid! Ensure your washer bottle is topped up. An empty reservoir is an automatic fail.
Windscreen: Chips or cracks larger than 10mm in the driver’s line of sight (or 40mm elsewhere) will likely result in a fail.
Dash Clutter: Remove any large sat-nav cradles or hanging air fresheners that might block your view.
4. Safety Essentials
Seatbelts: Pull each belt out fully to check for frays or cuts. Give them a sharp tug to ensure the "locking" mechanism works, and make sure they click securely into the buckle.
The Horn: Give it a quick blast. It needs to be loud, clear, and a single constant tone.
Warning Lights: If your dashboard is lit up like a Christmas tree, the tester will notice. Lights for ABS, Airbags, or Engine Management are now automatic fails.
5. Number Plates & VIN
Cleanliness: If your number plate is covered in road grime and unreadable, the tester can refuse to test the car. Give it a quick wipe.
Condition: Ensure the plate isn’t cracked or delaminated, and that the font/spacing is standard.
