Save Money at the Pump: The New UK Fuel Price Laws You Need to Know

We all know the frustration of filling up your tank, only to drive two miles down the road and see petrol 10p cheaper at another station. For years, finding the best deal on fuel felt like a guessing game.
However, as of early 2026, that has officially changed. Thanks to the new Mandatory Fuel Finder Scheme, UK drivers now have the power to track live prices and save money every time they top up.
What is the Fuel Finder Scheme?
Following an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), it was discovered that some retailers were charging excessive margins, with prices varying by as much as 20p per litre between different areas.
To fix this, the government introduced The Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025. This law makes it a legal requirement for every petrol station in the UK—from the big supermarket chains to small independent forecourts—to report their prices openly and honestly.
The 30-Minute Rule
The most important part of this new law is the "30-minute rule." Stations are now required to update their pricing data within 30 minutes of making a change at the pump. This ensures that the data you see on your phone is "live" and accurate.
How can you find the cheapest fuel?
You don’t have to go searching through government spreadsheets to find these prices. This "Open Data" is fed directly into the apps and tools you likely already use, including:
Comparison websites like PetrolPrices.com. https://www.fuel-finder.uk/ (image above)
Navigation apps like Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze.
In-car Sat-Nav systems.
By checking these apps before you head out, the average household is expected to save around £40 a year—though for high-mileage drivers, the savings could be much higher.
Why does this matter?
The goal is simple: transparency. When retailers have to publish their prices for everyone to see, it creates more competition. This prevents "price postcoding"—where fuel is significantly more expensive in certain regions simply because there is less local competition.
Keeping your car efficient
While the Fuel Finder Scheme helps you save money on the fuel itself, we are here to help you make that fuel last longer. From ensuring your tyres are at the correct pressure to keeping your engine serviced and efficient, a well-maintained car is the best way to keep your running costs down.
